Michelin North America was awarded a silver medal in the 2013 Edison Awards. With the X-Tweel SSL, Michelin took second place in the Transportation category. Gold went to Delphi Automotive with its „Connected Car“ device and the smart parking application „Parker“ by Streetline Inc. Took bronze honors.
“This is a tremendous honor for Michelin,” said Tim Fulton, head of Michelin Tweel Technologies. “Michelin’s Tweel first fascinated the world with the concept of the airless radial tire, and we are now using this revolutionary technology in the construction, agriculture, refuse and landscaping industries.”
Under the slogan „A Better Way Forward“, Michelin Tweel Technologies manufactures an airless radial tire known as the Tweel. This non-pneumatic tire uses the characteristics of traditional radial tire technology but eliminates costly equipment downtime generated by punctures, impact damage and air loss associated with pneumatic tires.
Currently only available for skid steer loaders, the X-Tweel SSL is being sold as the ideal solution for the landscaping, construction, contracting, refuse/recycling and agricultural industries.
“More than any year, this year’s slate of finalists demonstrate the enormous value of teamwork, experimentation, consumer focus, market awareness and game-changing success,” said Frank Bonafilia, Edison Awards’ executive director. “It’s exciting to see companies like Michelin continuing Thomas Edison’s legacy of challenging conventional thinking.”
The Edison Awards celebrate game-changing new products and services from around the world across a broad spectrum of industries and applications. The 2013 winners were announced during an award ceremony in Chicago on April 25th and the winning entries ranged from unique new barrier to harness tsunamis to a backpack bed with built-in mosquito netting for the homeless.
The panel of judges consisted of 3,000 peers, including business executives, past winners, academics and leaders in the fields of product development, design, engineering, science and medicine.
